When can I start learning to drive?

The lowest age before you can start to learn to drive is 17 and you have to have a Provisional Driving Licence. If you are disabled and receiving mobility allowance, the minimum age is 16. It is recommended that you have your eyesight checked to ensure that you meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving. Your driving instructor will also check that you meet the eyesight requirements on your first lesson.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

How do I obtain a Provisional Driving Licence?

At the start when you meet your driving instructor, you’ll be asked to produce both parts of your driving licence; the paper portion and the part containing your photograph. You cannot drive on the roads in the UK without a valid driving licence. To apply for a provisional driving licence, you will need to complete a D1 form, obtainable from Post Offices, or you can apply online from the DSA website.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

What is the Theory Test?

The Theory Test was introduced for car drivers and motorcyclists in 1996 by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). The aim of the theory test is to improve safety for newly qualified drivers. It comprises multiple choice questions and hazard perception clips. Click HERE for DSA website for more information.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Do I need to pass my Theory Test before I can take Driving Lessons?

You can start taking driving lessons once you have a driving licence. But, you must pass your theory test before you take your practical driving test. Your Theory Test pass certificate will remain valid for 12 months during which time you’ll need to pass your practical test. If you fail to pass your practical test within the 12 month period, you’ll have to re-sit the theory test.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

How many Driving Lessons will I need?

Every learner has a different ability so this can vary from pupil to pupil. The DSA recommend 45 hours of tuition with an instructor plus 25 hours in your own car if applicable.

After learning to drive with Barry, I can highly recommend Barry and Bewise Driving School to anyone else wishing to learn. I had another instructor from another company which made me scared of roads for a year. He never makes you feel pressured, he never shouts, he never does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. You can honestly count on him. He’s become a friend now and I’d recommend EVERYONE to learn with him. THANK YOU SO MUCH BARRY!! (PASSED March 2011)

Barry from Merton area was my instructor. Barry is an amazing instructor and carries himself in a very professional and friendly manner. I was really surprised with the pace I learnt. Through talking over my concerns, worries and any other questions I had, about driving or my test, with Barry it helped me to relax and focus on building my confidence. And thanks to him helped me pass
(PASSED Feb 2011)

I was fortunate enough to have Barry as my instructor. In particular, Barry is patient and has an easy to understand, practical approach to teaching. Also, the fees for Be Wise are certainly competitive. His lessons were well organised and focused on my weak areas – Never wasting time with unnecessary, minor things and gets straight to the point. Because of him I passed my test first time in Croydon test centre.

Appreciate your time spent with me Barry, Thanks. (PASSED Jan 2011)

I learnt with ‘Be Wise’ driving school and my instructor was Barry Smith. Barry was great! He was always patient with me and encouraging when I had difficulty with different maneuver’s.
I felt Be Wise was value for money – each lesson was only £20 which for me was great since I am only earning a part-time salary. I really enjoyed learning to drive and with a friendly, positive instructor. I looked forward to each lesson. And with simple techniques I picked up the skills easily and quickly. Also, I felt I passed fairly quickly – in less than 9 months. Compared to many of my friends who started at the same time, if not before, and still have not passed! And now I have a car in time for my 18th which is awesome – So thanks Barry, from Nicole! (PASSED Dec 2010)

Hi, I am from Streatham area and did my test in South Norwood. I was a little nervous on my very first lesson but when I met Barry he put me at ease straight away. Each lesson I did I became more and more confident and that was with the reassurance of Barry. He was always very calm and friendly, even when I did get a little frustrated with myself. I would definitely recommend Barry as a driving instructor. Many Thanks, couldn’t have done it without your help. (PASSED Dec 2010)

If you are thinking of learning to drive, you will want to do everything possible to get ready yourself for this hard but necessary life skill. If you use a driving school then you will become much better prepared to drive than you ever could be on your own. Practicing is fantastic but if you do not practice under the supervision of someone who knows all about driving you may learn to drive incorrectly.

When you begin your first driving lesson in a driving school, they will begin at that very moment to prepare you to drive. You will begin by learning the basics of driving and the basic rules of the road as well as what all road signs mean. You will learn to be very comfortable behind the wheel of your car before you go to take the test, and eventually get out on the open road on your own.

The greater the variety of situations you get to drive in while driving under supervision the better range of skills you will develop. All of these skills will add to your experience and make you a much better driver once you get out on your own. Some situations that will help you drive could include practicing in the rain and at night. Both rain and darkness make driving much more difficult and learning in these conditions will intensely add to your overall skills and confidence. Nothing is scarier than driving in the rain for your first time with no experience and being all alone. You could panic and make very bad decisions that could even cost you your life. Learning safe driving, even in dangerous conditions, is essential to being a well rounded safe driver.

You should also practice all the very essential skills you will need when driving like making three point turns, parallel parking, backing up your car, and parking in parking lots. These skills seem difficult to learn but if you are using the professional help of driving instructors, you will be much more ready to drive all on your own. Getting help from a driving school is one of the very best ways to prepare yourself mentally and physically for driving on your own. The driving instructors will help you learn to be comfortable and confident when you are driving and to make the right decisions in dangerous situations.

When driving, you need to think about so many unique things at once, it can not only be intimidating but also distracting for some people. When you get the right amount of practice behind the wheel then you start to get better at doing all the things you need to do naturally like checking your rear view mirror at certain intervals, checking all ways before changing lanes, and signalling every time you turn or change lanes. All of the things you need to do while driving can be done while still having your focus on the road and your speed. While getting professional teaching for driving, you will develop the quick reaction time that is necessary to prevent costly accidents.

If you use lots of practice and a well qualified driving school you will be equipped to drive on your own in no time at all!
